Build Web Agents That Feel Human with Magentic UI

Ever feel like most web chatbots are just fancy FAQ retrievers? They wait for a prompt, spit out a block of text, and the conversation feels… transactional. What if you could build an agent that proactively interacts with a user, guiding them through a process with natural, dynamic UI elements that appear right when needed? That’s the shift Magentic UI is exploring.

It’s a Microsoft Research project that asks: instead of just having an LLM generate text, what if it could generate the next piece of the user interface itself? The result is a more fluid, conversational, and assistive web experience.

What It Does

Magentic UI is a library for building interactive web agents. At its core, it lets a large language model (LLM) not only converse with a user but also decide and render specific UI components—like buttons, forms, or selectors—into the chat interface on the fly. The agent drives the conversation forward by injecting these interactive elements, making the flow feel less like a Q&A and more like a collaborative session with a helpful assistant.

Why It’s Cool

The magic here is in the dynamic UI generation. Traditional chatbot flows are pre-defined. With Magentic UI, the agent’s reasoning determines what UI component is necessary at that moment to progress the task.

  • Context-Aware Interactions: Imagine an agent helping you book a trip. After you mention a destination, it could instantly render a date picker. Once dates are selected, it might generate a selector for room preferences. The UI is generated in direct response to the conversation context.
  • Beyond Static Text: It moves the interaction past plain text, allowing the user to provide structured input (via forms, clicks, etc.) with minimal effort, which the agent can then seamlessly incorporate into its next steps.
  • Developer Control: You define the set of UI components (or "tools") the agent is allowed to use—like a Button, TextInput, or Select. The LLM chooses which tool to call and with what arguments, and the library handles the rendering and the callback, feeding the result back into the agent’s loop.

This makes it powerful for building guided workflows, onboarding assistants, interactive troubleshooting wizards, or any application where the path might change based on user input.

How to Try It

The project is on GitHub and includes examples to get you started. You’ll need a Python environment and an OpenAI API key (or compatible endpoint) to power the LLM decisions.
